The 2009 season for the Western PA Warhawks opened up with a bone crushing battle featuring cross town rivals the Pittsburgh Pride. The new look Warhawks lead by Coach Dan Nunzer kept with the Warhawk tradition of shutting down the oppositions offensive attack and a healthy dose of smash mouth football.
Allthough the Pride failed to score any offensive points, a few miscues on the Warhawks special teams was the difference and all the Pride needed for the victory.
An early interception by Warhawks Free Safety Alex Simmions looked to set the tone early, but the Pride’s defense answered the call shutting down the Warhawk offense. Thus starting a back and forth possession game lasting the entire afternoon. Most of the game was really close with each team failing to capitalize on big opportunities. It was very much like a heavyweight fight that looked to the go the distance. Hit after hit, trading blows seris after seris.
At the end of the first half the score was still knoghted up at 0 and it stayed that way until a big time punt return for six in the third quarter changed the course of the game. A failed conversion put the Pride up 6-0. From that point on the Pride slowed the pace and focused on chewing up clock.
As the battle wore on each deffense continued to stop the opposition for the remainder of the 3rd and most of the 4th keeping the Pride up by only a touchdown. Until a miscue on Warhawk special teams. A snap sailing over the punters deep in Warhawk territory resulted in a Safety now making the score 8-0 in favor of the Pride.
Down but not out the Warhawks stopped the Pride offense attack and drove down the field on key plays from Fullback Whitney White, Tight End George Smith, and Quarterback David Brickner. Although the Warhawks didn’t make it in the end zone a clutch field goal by Jared Thomas had the Warhawks down by only 5.
Time was running out but the Warhawks had stopped the Pride’s offense all day. So with about six minutes to go the Warhawks kicked off to the Pride but unfortunately the home team would not see the ball again. The Pride pounded the middle imposing their will play after play picking up key first downs to keep the clock running.
It was a good hard fought game and both teams look very promising this year. The Pittsburgh Pride will take their 1 - 0 record back home to face last years Champs the West Virginia Lightning. The Warhawks will hit the road and square off agains the West Virginia Gladiators for a night capper. Kickoff is at 7pm.
